my story

Why I created HikeStrong

I created HikeStrong after noticing the same pattern again and again..... Many hikers were attempting some incredible adventures but simply weren't prepared for the demands of the trail.

Hiking has always been one of my favourite ways to spend time outdoors.

There’s something unique about being out on the trail — long climbs, incredible scenery, and the satisfaction of reaching places that most people never see.

Over the years, through both my own hiking and my work as a strength and conditioning coach, I began to train more and more hikers to help them prepare...

Steep climbs, long descents and carrying a pack for hours place very specific demands on the body.

Without the right preparation, hikers often experience fatigue, sore knees, or simply struggle to enjoy the experience as much as they hoped.

That realisation led me to begin specialising in helping hikers prepare properly for these challenges.

And that’s where HikeStrong began.

Why most hikers struggle on the trail

Carrying a pack feels exhausting

Training isn't specific to hiking

Legs fatigue too quickly

Struggle on hills

HIKESTRONG TRAIL READY SYSTEM

A smarter way to train for hiking

Strength + Endurance. Built specifically for hikers. Simple, practical approach

The HikeStrong 5C Framework

Many people assume the best way to prepare for hiking is simply to walk more.

While walking helps, hiking demands much more from the body.

Climbing requires strong legs.
Descending requires control around the knees and hips.
Long hiking days require endurance.
Carrying a pack adds additional load.

The HikeStrong approach focuses on preparing the body for these specific demands.

The system is built around a simple framework known as the 5C Method.

Correct

Improve mobility, balance and movement patterns so the body moves efficiently.

Condition

Build strength in the muscles that power climbs and support the knees.

Capacity

Develop the endurance needed for long days on the trail.

Carry

Prepare the body to handle pack weight comfortably.

Conquer

Approach your hike with confidence knowing your body is ready.

TESTIMONIALS

What Hikers say after completing the 5-Day Kickstart.

"I joined the 5-Day challenge because I needed some help and was feeling overwhelmed with planning an upcoming Hike in Tasmania. Tristan was very good and restored my confidence with some practical tips on how to train properly and found the 5 days of coaching extremely useful"

- Louise

"I never realised how important strength training for hiking is until I started working with Tristan! He gave me a solid plan with some really practical advice including how to make sure I was getting enough nutrition on trail."

-Frank

"I orginally joined the 5-day challenge because if a 4 night hike I was planning and wasn't sure I was fit enough & needed some general advice on gear & equipment. After the challenge I decided to continue with Tristan on his 8 week coaching program and now I feel I have the confidence to take on longer and more challenging walks. I also have a plan to keep up with my strength training and now even enjoy lifting weights"
